An abstract painter from Transylvania, Ioan Florea attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Romania, graduating in 1996. A few years later, he was awarded a grant from George Soros' Open Society Foundation. This grant enabled him to travel to the United States to study for his master's degree. His Master of Fine Arts degree was completed in 2001. During and after his degree program he exhibited work in numerous spaces throughout the region and Europe

In 2002, he and his wife, also an artist, relocated to central Illinois, midway between Chicago and St. Louis. His paintings are in several collections across the United States and Europe.
