An Artist’s Meandering Mind

Life as an Artist

Rain, Rain

The beach here has been closed all summer so far- low water level. A complete disappointment. We’ve been looking forward to the beach all winter. Last night it poured and poured though, so my fingers are crossed. Kept me awake, but anyway, it will help my little garden grow. We don’t have a lot free dirt for planting, but I managed to cram in some plants.

Oil and Water

On: May 8th, 2007 at 4:22 am | In: Art Talk

my computer hates me. second time trying to write something, I keep losing my internet. anyway, its back so i’d better write while i can.

i’ve been squeezing some art work here and there in between a hundred things that Have to be done. Mostly I’ve been doing some mixed media drawing. it helps me to start thinking about larger pieces, and the materials are a nice change.

I’m a little conflicted about my paintings….just little technical things here and there. I want to try including a couple different techniques…I’ve been experimenting in my head, but not much in reality. Also, I am thinking I may try acrylic. As much as I like oil, acrylic is making a lot of sense….will have to see. I love the thought of using water-based instead of all the solvents for so many reasons. Decisions…

Pop-ups

On: April 26th, 2007 at 4:38 pm | In: Uncategorized

We’ve been having pop-up issues with the website. I have finally managed to get rid of them. Those things are so annoying! As I thought, they were coming from our webstats service. I’m so glad they’re gone! I don’t know why it took me so long to make the connection.

In other news, most of my show is back in my studio…in my way. A few pieces are staying at the gallery for now. The show was good, a lot of interest and positive feedback.

So I have finally finished my website,..only took a couple of years. Well I had a site before, but I never liked it. I think I uploaded that the same day as my opening reception. The reception went pretty well. A lot of positive comments and such. Anyway, that seems like a long time ago now. I am writing kinda late, but I’ve been busy with other things. Ioan has a show coming up…I’ve been helping a bit with that. We also took a little trip to Chicago, so that was good. I really like Chicago, I can easily see myself living there. Except we’d have to give up so much space…maybe someday. I want to get there more often at least.

Here’s the link to the article about my show in the Herald & Review. article. Within the article there’s link to an image gallery, but I’ll put the direct link here too. images.

Also had an article in the local Daily Union today, but I don’ have a link to it yet.

Show

On: March 1st, 2007 at 6:11 pm | In: Uncategorized

My show is ready!…went up last night and I’m happy with the way it looks, although it was a bit rocky getting everything organized beforehand. The opening reception is tomorrow… so that should be good. I’m scheduled to do a talk, but really it will be more of a Q&A, I’m not too big about lecturing on my work. I prefer to let my work speak for itself instead of influencing how people see it.

I think there will be a jazz performer there, I don’t know a lot about the details, but it should be interesting anyway. I think there should be an article in the paper too, so I’ll post the link when it’s online.

Show Preparations

On: January 24th, 2007 at 6:29 am | In: Uncategorized, Art Talk

I’ll be having a show in March, and I’ve been getting a lot work done for that. I have definitely been dragging my feet for the last few years, but I’m done with that now. I feel like my show is long overdue, of course that’s mostly my fault. I should have been back to it before now. It’s nice to be getting work done and knowing that I have a place to display it -the show will be in Decatur at the the Beacon Art Gallery

Crazy & Lazy

On: November 2nd, 2006 at 6:51 pm | In: Uncategorized

It’s been pretty crazy lately. Our daughter had a birthday, the kitten was sick, Ioan’s preparing a show, and endless little things that just get piled up. But, the show’s almost ready, our daughter is finally out of diapers and the cat is feeling better! Last thing i needed to deal with was a squirting cat.
I’m hoping to get my own show together soon too. I think I may have resolved some of the technical problems I’ve had with my work, which is a relief. It is really frustrating to have to wade through all these detail problems before I can get to the actual painting…which makes me really lazy. What details? Just the physical canvas itself. Since I’m not stretching them, it creates a whole other series of problems. Anyway, I think I may have found a better way. Will have to put it to the test though and start some serious work.

Early Bird

On: October 7th, 2006 at 1:05 pm | In: Uncategorized

I’ve been up since 4:30….am. I don’t really know why, other than our little kitten(yes, we have a kitten now! )woke up our daughter, and she woke me up. Of course, everyone else went back to sleep, but I was thinking too much for that. ideas..art, etc. running through my head, couldn’t do much about them without waking everyone up again. I did actually write things down to remember though, so that’s good…not a complete waste of creativity.

So much to do, and not enough hours in the day, even when I get up at 4:30. Lots going on today, not much time left over to create. well, i guess it is Saturday after all.

Older Painting

On: September 21st, 2006 at 5:55 pm | In: Art Talk
This is an older painting, titled Deliverance. It used to be on the website, but since it sold I removed it from my current site. I’m putting back here, because I have had questions about where it is. It was always one of my favorites, and it was difficult to part with it to be honest. But I’d rather it be hanging on someone’s wall then in storage in my studio. It’s about 3×4 feet, unstretched as much of my work is these days.
My mom thought asked me if the title had anything to do with the movie of the same name….the answer is NO, absolutely not. I’ve never even seen that movie and really don’t want to either. The title just appeared in my head as I was painting.
